the genealogy db software is geneweb: http://www.geneweb.org/ download the latest version for your os from: http://opensource.geneanet.org/projects/geneweb/files on the logical drive on which you intend to install it, create a "/pkg/gw" folder, then install the downloaded software there: do not use the default installation location. do not use the package's software to create any db: instead, download the db from here. to install or update your copy of my family genealogy db: 1st time: 1. in your "/pkg/gw" folder, create a new folder, name it "update" 2. download 3 files into the new folder: base.gw : db in external format for mac: gwi.sh : script to install it into your db copy gwd.sh : script to run the db server for windows: gwi.txt : batch file to install it into your db copy gwd.txt : batch file to run the db server rename gwd.txt to gwd.bat rename gwi.txt to gwi.bat 3. create shortcuts to gwi.bat & gwd.bat and put them on your desktop 4. to install the update: mac: run gwi.sh windows: click on the gwi shortcut subsequently: 1. download base.gw to the "/pkg/gw/update" folder you can get it directly via url: http://cawjhw.x10.mx/base.gw 2. install the update NOTE: MS IE wants to change the file type to "HTML" and the extension to ".htm": be sure to change file selection type to "all files" and the extension back to the correct value ( ".gw" or ".bat" ) before proceeding to execute the download. if you neglect to do this, you will have to rename the files manually to get this to work. note: updating the db completely replaces it: any changes made on your computer will be lost. to use the db: 1. click on the gwd shortcut to run the server, which will tell you the url to use to access it 2. use your favorite browser to the specified url -- for those who just want a ged file, which may not contain all data, download base.ged note that the ged file is about 68% bigger than the gw file
